Ireland, April 2013: Recommendations
Touristy Stuff
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliffs_of_Moher
Twenty years ago, I stood on a slippery outcropping of rock 700 feet (sorry: 214 m) above the leaping, growling Atlantic and braced myself against a strong, unsteady wind as this picture was taken. Today, access to that spot is barricaded for safety reasons.
As you observe it from that distance you first realize that, truth be told, it was pretty sensible to block it off; then you realize the tragicomic potential in the decision to ever stand that close to the edge; and finally you bow and kiss both the new barricades and the tourist-tramped slates between you and the Earth where, undeservedly, you still live.
Yes, the Cliffs of Moher have (sigh) gone the way of all natural wonders: Guardrails, giftshops, admission fees, and an official logo. But come on, once you come anywhere west of Dublin , you can't not visit this place. The bad news? Your photos will look no better than anyone else's. The good news? No worse, either.
